The Pink Piano is made from a First Act brand “Grand Piano” I found at a thrift store. It’s
made of cheap wood and the sound is created by the clacky plastic keys hitting some metal tines inside. It sounds broken. My kid loves it and like all musical toys I buy, I planned to meticulously sample it.
The recording was done at 24-bit; 96kHz using a pair of small diaphragm cardioid condensers and an omni condenser in the center. Each note was recorded at 3 velocities. Noise reduction was applied, the three mics were mixed, then each note was cut with the perfect start time, length and each set of velocities was set to specific peak levels. Finally the files were mapped across the keys in KONTAKT. This was all incredibly time consuming.

Ongelegen has announced the release of Water, its 5th free sample pack featuring
binaural recordings.
This release consists small scale performances of splashes, bubbles, drips and more which I tried to capture as big as possible. I say small scale as everything was recorded in the studio with a bucket full of water and a few other props.
I setup the dummy vertically with it’s face above the water. Several times things got a bit out of hand resulting in water getting on the floor and the dummy getting splashed in the face. Luckily both the floor and the dummy survived.

Mildon Studios has released the Pringles Drumkit SFZ, a free sound library featuring the
sounds of a pringles can.
It’s natural for us musicians to turn everyday objects (or snacks) into musical instruments, it’s in our blood. But even non-musicians can easily discover the musical potential of a half-empty can of Pringles. Listen to this delicious demo.
This famous canister starts crackling as soon as it leaves the table and doesn’t stop until you put it back down. With a little effort and the right slapping/shaking/tapping/chip-scratching/biting technique, we’ve turned this potato crisp popper into a complete drum machine.
We didn’t do a lot of processing to the samples to preserve the raw crumby sound, except for a few slaps and taps that had to be layered to get the ‘kick’ and ‘snare’ to sound big enough. A little bluemix here and there, some compression, that’s it.
We selected a few samples from about a hundred to be a part of this kit, so you can expect another crackly kit soon. It gave us a lot of fun, and now it’s your turn to make some crunchy beats!
